Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Manipura Kitchen

With only two more NorthWest Crossing Farmers Markets for the season, you need to head on down to check out the goodness before it’s too late. One such “goodness” is Manipura Kitchen, a local Bend company founded in January of this year. Founder Anne Farnault grew up in France and going to the local market each week with her Mom is one of her favorite memories. After working at a Los Angeles Farmers Market for several seasons, Anne decided to fuse three of her passions – Ayurveda, Farmer’s Markets and cooking – to create a line of Infused Ghee.

In Ayurvedic Medicine “Ghee” (clarified butter) plays an important role in overall health and well-being because of its healing properties. Ghee is made by cooking butter to remove all milk solids and water. What is left after this process is: pure golden oil with a Royal flavored aroma. By infusing spices and herbs in the ghee, Anne takes it to the next level and creates a large palette of flavored healing ghee infusions.

There are several ways to use Manipura Kitchen’s products for healthy living. The company’s Ghee is a great cooking oil, and can also be added to soups, steamed vegetables, desserts, smoothies, even coffee or tea is adding a punch of flavors to your dishes. Ghee is paleo friendly, and does not require refrigeration.

In addition to her products, Anne offers Private Ayurvedic Cooking classes with a French flair for healthy living at your home. Her cooking addresses the needs of individuals who are vegetarian, non vegetarian, gluten free, soy free or dairy free.

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Adoboloco

Making things even hotter at this year’s Farmers Market is Adoboloco! This Oregon company was founded in 2011 and this is their first year spicing things up for us here in Bend. The company creates a wide variety of hot sauces which are based on the flavor of the pepper varietals used. This process is similar to fine wine or coffee – the way that Adoboloco grows and selects chili peppers from farmers can be likened to the way wineries select grapes. The seasonal and environmental influences affect the flavor, color and heat levels of the pepper, and they embrace and mention these differences on each bottle.

You can also be sure there is no funny business inside each bottle – all of Adoboloco’s hot sauces use only four ingredients and the sauce is naturally preseved. There aren’t any fillers, gums, oils or sugars in Adoboloco’s products. One of their sauces has five ingredients – the Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce – which has a “whole lot” of naturally sweet fresh Hawaiian Pineapple.

They said, “While on vacation visiting family here in Bend, we visited the market several times. We love how organized it is and the variety of high quality vendors.”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Rofe Designs

Roanna Fe Gingrich founded Rofe Designs in 2010, and this will be the company’s second year participating in the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market. All of the designs for Rofe Designs clothing are hand-drawn (nothing digital!) and hand-screened. The clothing itself is ethically made that is soft and comfortable, and looks good too!

Roanna said, “I love the location of this market and the low-key feel. The quality of products sold at the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market is unmatched for other markets this size.”

Salem based Rofe Designs is hoping to expand soon with a mobile storefront that can come to customers, with an option of holding a private Rofe party – for rewards, wardrobe expansion and even for a fundraiser. Part of the aim of this new model will be to support local and small businesses with outside products for Roanna’s craft. She is continuously working at new ways to be more sustainable and create options for giving back to the beautiful community in which we live.

She continued, “The NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market gives me a real excuse to spend more time in the Bend area, little getaway from the valley!”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Holm Made Toffee

One of our longest running vendors at the Farmers Market, Holm Made Toffee is back for their sixth year in a row. This small, family-run business was started as a hobby by Donna Holm in 2007, and is now run by Donna, who makes all the toffee by hand and her daughter-in-law Randi Holm, who manages sales, marketing and events. Donna is often joined by her other children and grandchildren who like to help, so it is a true family affair.

Over the years, the company has grow slowly but surely through word of mouth. They participate in numerous markets and events across the state and can also be found in 50+ stores in the Pacific NW.

Randi said, “We LOVE the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market because we get to meet lots of new faces each week – as well as see familiar ones. Not only do a lot of Bend locals attend, but also a lot of tourists. We love hearing stories from our customers on why they are purchasing our candy and where it gets to travel. Last year we heard from folks taking it all the way to Europe or even just home down the street!”

In addition, the company has teamed up with many other market vendors on some collaboration projects. Jeff and Juli Labhart from Bonta Gelato use some of Holm Made Toffee’s flavors in their gelato, and so does Addy Mac’s Ice Cream in their toffee flavor ice cream.  Holm Made Toffee also uses dried lavender buds from market vendor Tumalo Lavender in their lavender toffee. Partnerships made in heaven – or at the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market as the case may be.

Randi continued, “The market has grown A TON since I first started participating and it has been great to see what new vendors, musical acts and FUN are here in 2016!”

If you are looking for something one-of-a-kind that will start a conversation, then first-time market vendor Pink Rakes Studio has it! Founded earlier this year by Stephanie Petershagen, Pink Rakes creates hand-built ceramics and sculpture that are sure to catch the eye.

From useful pieces like small plates, spoon rests and vases, to abstract masks and yard art, Pink Rakes pulls out all the stops. Creativity abounds in every piece! The best way to explain the items that you might see at the market from this vendor is to show you some photos. See below!

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: DK Designs Jewelry

While you may have definitely seen the beautiful creations of local company, DK Designs Jewelry, this is the first year you’ll find them at the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market. Founded three years ago by owner Donna K, DK Designs makes unique pieces of hand crafted jewelry.

Made using recycled materials, Swarovski crystals and materials chosen by the customer, each piece is made with attention to detail. Both the materials used and the quality craftsmanship are made to last. The company focuses on precious metals that are said to have holistic properties, so not only are the creations beautiful but they can help you feel better as well. For example, copper was used by ancient Egyptians and Aztecs for its healing properties and elements like hematite have been said to alleviate fevers.

Donna has been a resident of Oregon for three generations, and DK Designs creates jewelry with a true Oregon feel – combining local organic elements with a new modern industrial twist.

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Bucha Buena Fermentation Creations

Coming back to the market for its second year, Bucha Buena brings visitors its local, craft kombucha. The company’s brewery is located on Bend’s westside in true micro craft fashion: it’s created in the backyard of owners’ Brooke Moore and Brit Nelson.

Bucha Buena takes local seriously as they only use real fruit to flavor their product, and everything they use is sourced in our home state of Oregon. They are looking forward to sharing their fare with visitors at the Farmers Market, as their brewery is not open to the public. So Saturday is your best chance to try out their kombucha – and more.

They said, “We are excited about the release of our new Sour Series, a hard kombucha that is 4.1% ABV, and aged in oak barrels. Our website will have tap listings for where you can find it around town.”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: MaileKai Creates, LLC

Founded in 2010, MaileKai Creates makes useful and fun works of art by up-cycling all those beautiful bottles in the world. The company takes discarded bottles and uses several processes to create items that can be used again and again.

Some of their pieces are slumped (melted in a kiln) to create one-of-a-kind gifts, spoon rests, soap or jewelry dishes, serving or hors d’oeuvres dishes and much more. Other bottles are carefully cut and sanded into drinking glasses, vases, or goblets, enabling customers to re-claim their favorite bottles and turn them into useful items.

This family business is run by Robert Clark (chief bottle cutter) and Elise Clark (chief bottle slumper), plus a bottle cleaning and sanding crew made up of four teenagers: Jodi, Kai, Sami, Alex. Most of the bottles MaileKai collects are from in and around Bend, from local bars and eateries, as well as from all those recycle bins that are curbside twice a month. The team scavenges for their favorites, and also have many customers collecting bottles for them to use, saving them from the landfill.

Elise says, “We love the NWX market because the combination of Farmers and Artists makes for an interesting mix of vendors. Great food, awesome music, and happy customers always makes for a fun day.”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Zantana Designs

Back again to the market with their unique jewelry line made of fine finished dichroic glass and sterling silver, Zantana Designs pieces help wearers make a statement! In most of the company’s handcrafted pieces, the dichroic glass is multilayered giving it a sense of depth and revealing a variety of colors. Founded in 2002 by Berta Heisler and her husband Rex, Zantana Designs has been attending the market for the last three years.

Although they were busy developing some national gallery work in the past, this year, the couple plans to stay closer to home (their studio is near Smith Rock, providing plenty of beautiful inspiration).

Berta says, “We will do mostly local shows this year to stay in touch with our roots and the fine people of Central Oregon. We love the environment at the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market.”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Precious Cargo Seafood

Seafood is the perfect fresh and tasty food for summer days in Oregon. Bend company, Precious Cargo Seafood is under new ownership this year – Dawn Mitchell is the new proprietor – and it will be her first year participating in the market.

Her seafood stock changes with the catch, and is updated regularly on her website (she also takes special orders). The company carries 100 percent wild caught seafood, so you can be sure you are purchasing your fish from a sustainable source. Many of her products are flash frozen at sea, which preserves the freshness of the fish. At this year’s market, she will not only be selling a selection of seafood, but also will have live crawdads, along with all the extras – Rik’s Rubs (local company), pasta, bread, batter mixes, marinades, BBQ supplies, planks and everything needed to create a seafood meal. A one-stop shop for a great dining experience!

Mitchell, who is a Central Oregon native, said, “I am really excited to be in the NW Crossing Farmers Market. I can’t wait to meet new people and just enjoy being outside having fun at work!”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: The Scott Allen Company

The Scott Allen Company is back for the third year running at the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market – but you might not recognize the name – the company was formerly known as RELIC Workshop. The same beautiful products will be available though – Allen designs and handcrafts modern industrial furniture, using reclaimed local materials whenever possible.

He says, “I think the thing that makes my work unique is the marrying of natural warm materials with linear modern industrial design. I employ sustainable business practices.”

The Scott Allen Company makes everything from tiny concrete planters to building custom tables and fixtures for restaurants (you can see his work at NorthWest Crossing’s Bend Pizza Kitchen). The company was founded 12 years ago in a Napa Valley garage, and moved to Bend three years ago. Business is good with double digit growth from 2014-2015.

Allen continued, “This will be my third year at NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market. I love the market. It gets me out of the shop and into the community of like-minded artists, farmers, proprietors and the people that seek genuine hand grown and handmade things. There’s this wonderful camaraderie that naturally incubates. It allows me interface with my clients and talk about the process, the materials and the product in a way that is genuine. It puts a face on what it is I do and I think the passion comes through.”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Cascade Lavender

Celebrating 10 years in business this year, Cascade Lavender offers organic, local lavender made into an extensive range of products. The company sells everything lavender from 100 percent essential oil to bath and body products all the way to aromatherapy products and dried lavender. In addition, Cascade Lavender offers culinary lavender products, fresh lavender plants and bouquets.

This is the company’s third year participating in the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market, and their farm is also open to the public during the summer.

They say, “We love everything about the market – the organizers, the other vendors, the great live music and, of course, the clientele.”

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: ACME Hot Hog Company

A brand-new food vendor at the market this year, ACME Hot Dog Co brings hot dogs that are anything but run-of-the-mill. ACME offers grilled all beef hot dogs and veggie dogs served on toasted buns with specialty toppings such as creamy homemade mac and cheese topped with bacon, BBQ sauce, and chives.

Brendan Maier, founder of the company, said, “We love all the action at a farmer’s market and we look forward to sharing our hot dogs with Bendites and visitors alike!”

The company was founded earlier this year, and you may have seen their bright red food cart around at various events this spring. Come down and try a dog!

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: DD Ranch

DD Ranch is back for our 2016 Farmers Market – they’ve been a part of the market since the very beginning! Always a favorite for visitors to the market, not only does the Terrebonne-based ranch bring out a fun Petting Zoo and Pony Rides but they also sell their grass-finished meats at the market.

Original owner Mike Duggan and his partners, Jeff and Linda Anspach, have this to say about their experience at the Farmer’s Market: “We have made many friends over the years and look forward to making many more.  Teaching people about the benefits of grass fed and finished meats coupled with consuming local raw honey is very rewarding.  Regarding our Petting Zoo and Pony Rides, it is always a joy to see the look on the children’s faces when they pet a pig or baby calf for the first time or take their first pony ride.”

Grass finished meats from DD Ranch have no hormones, chemicals or grain. The beef they are selling is free-range and grass-finished, and they also have heritage pork and lamb fed wheat and alfalfa that is grown right on the Ranch. Visiting their booth at the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market is a great way to source local meats to feed your family!  In addition to meat, DD Ranch will be selling Central Oregon Raw Honey. Many locals use this honey for years in an effort to combat allergies to the local pollens.

NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market Vendor Profile: Maragas Winery

Ground-breaking Central Oregon winery Maragas joins us at our Farmers Market for the first time this season, selling wines made and processed at their winery in Central Oregon. The winery also has two estate wines that are made with grapes grown at their Terrebonne area vineyard.

Owners Doug and Gina Maragas are looking forward to participating in the market. They said, “This market is well known for its great selection of vendors and the local-minded customers it attracts.  We are looking forward to bringing our wines to the local crowd in such a great location.  The atmosphere is fun and festive, seeming to be a perfect pair with our products.”

Doug Maragas learned wine making from his grandparents, who brought their winemaking over from Europe in 1941.  The company’s wines are made using all natural, old world proven techniques. That means no additives or chemistry, Doug just guides the grapes to express their magic in the finished wine.

Maragas Winery also capitalizes on the dry Central Oregon climate, which causes micro oxygenation (evaporation) to occur when in the barrel providing richer flavors.  Over the last 10 years, the company has experimented with many different grape varietals to determine what the Central Oregon region will grow.  They have found that their vineyard is great for Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Gris & Meunier, Chardonnay and a few others.  Maragas Winery is just getting started with the terroir in Central Oregon and can’t wait to reveal the wines. Farmers Market Profile: DD Ranch

If you’re a local, you may best know DD Ranch  in Terrebonne, as a great place for a day of family fun.  The Ranch has a Kids Corral, Petting Zoo, Hay Rides, Pony Rides, Sand Box, DD Dirt Express, Nature Walks, U-pick Flowers, U-Dig Potatoes and seasonally, a  Pumpkin Patch and Christmas Tree Lane with Santa.  Schools & Moms groups participate in Spring and Fall Field Trips and Birthday Parties.  The Country Market features home décor by local vendors along with meat, eggs, raw local honey and seasonal produce.

DD Ranch brings part of the fun to the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market each Saturday, where they bring out the Pony Rides and Petting Zoo.  In addition, they offer their 100% grass-fed and finished beef —no hormones, no chemicals, steroids and no grain—and pastured, Heritage Breed pork,  raw local honey and delicious eggs. DD Ranch’s free-range, grass fed beef is some of the best meat in the world! During the growing season, they also bring vegetables, i.e. rhubarb, corn, potatoes out.

“We’ve been participating in the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market for many years,” they said. “We enjoy the priceless expressions on the children’s faces when they interact with animals that they may not otherwise have an opportunity to get ‘up close and personal’ with.  It also gives us the chance to educate the adults regarding the advantages of eating healthy rather than processed foods.  Overall, it is a great place to have fun and teach families about healthy eating and animals at the same time.”

When Mike and Diann Duggan purchased the ranch back in the late 80s, they wanted to create a place for families to bring their children and learn about ranch life and animals. They extend this mission at the Farmers Market!

Farmers Market Profile: Thai on the Fly

Pimonpan Bentz (Maam), owner of Thai on the Fly, grew up in Bangkok, Thailand. The creations of Maam have originated from her experiences in her family’s restaurants with four generations of chefs. This brings a lot of tradition to her recipes, which have been passed down through the family for a thousand years. She said, “Thai people are proud to have eating and cooking as a very important part of our life. That is what has made Thai food world famous for its extraordinary blend of spices and unique balance of flavors.”

Most days you will find the Thai on the Fly cart in downtown Bend tucked behind Sportsvision on the corner of Bond and Oregon streets. On Saturday, you’ll find this mobile authentic Thai cuisine at our very own Farmers Market!

Maam says, “The NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market has been a wonderful experience for us. We started last year and are so happy to join again. Great music and a wonderful community feeling makes for the perfect venue for some flavorful Thai food. And we can do some shopping at some of the other great vendors at the same time.”

Farmers Market Profile: Holm Made Toffee

Holm Made Toffee is a small, family-run business in Bend, Oregon, which was started by Donna Holm as a hobby once she retired from teaching in 2007. She had been making toffee for decades and it always got rave reviews. Fairly soon, it became a family affair and the company has grown slowly but surely through word-of-mouth and participation in numerous markets and events across the state. You can also find their toffees in 40+ stores in the Pacific NW. While Donna still produces all the batches by hand, her daughter-in-law Randi runs the sales, marketing and events. (They are often joined by her other children and grandchildren who like to help!)

Every bag of Holm Made Toffee is a work of art. Donna’s been making toffee from her recipe for more than 25 years and it is so good, there’s no need to change it for generations to come! She puts in a combination of Oregon grown hazelnuts, semi-sweet chocolate, butter and sugar for a magical, delightful and sweet result.

Farmers Market Profile: Fearless Baking

The NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market is happy to welcome back the wholesome goodness from Fearless Baking!  Since opening their doors in 2013, Fearless Baking has been making simple, scratch made pastries. From the moment they begin baking in the early hours of the morning for the company’s wholesale accounts to preparing breakfast, lunch & coffee for individual customers, they are proud to do so fearlessly! The company specializes in both gluten free and traditional pastries, and even makes beautiful custom wedding cakes.

This year is Fearless Baking’s third time participating in the NWX Farmers Market and their whole staff is excited to particpate again. Owners Elise Kukulka and Abby Jensen say, “The farmers markets are a great way for us Fearless Bakers to talk with our customers, share samples and gather farm fresh produce for the week. The NWX Market is a wonderful community of vendors, artisans and farmers whom we look to for sourcing local, fresh ingredients for our bakery; From the flowers in our shop, to trading gluten free flour tips, fresh raspberries or marionberries for scones and vegetables for our lunch options.”

Farmers Market Profile: Justy’s Jellies

More than 15 years ago, Justy Haney of Justy’s Jellies bought the rights to some extraordinary jelly that was being sold in a restaurant where she worked. When the restaurant closed, she wanted the jellies to live on and her company was born. Starting with the original two recipes – Pineapple Jalapeno Jelly, and Pineapple Roasted Garlic Jelly – , Justy has expanded the line with new flavors that she has created herself. Best seller Very Berry Jalapeno is joined in the lineup by hotter jellies like Pineapple Habanero, Very Berry Habanero and Tropical Heat. Sweeter versions feature flavors like Vanilla Peach, Strawberry Daiquiri, Margarita and her favorite the Tropical Fruit.

The unique flavors make these locally made jellies standout from other – they are all fruit based with several surprising ingredients in them. She focuses on the use of Oregon fruits, and buys her peppers during the growing season from a local farm. Justy handmakes and handpours each batch of jelly.

Justy has been participating on and off in the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market for the past four years. She says, “I like the vibe of the market.”

Farmers Market Profile: Tumalo Lavender

More than just aromatic cut fresh lavender, Tumalo Lavender offers fine handcrafted lavender soaps, luscious lavender lotions, lavender-infused jams, jelly and honey and much more! At their farm, they even offer a refreshing, unique Lavender Lemonade.

Owners Gordon and Judy Knight have been participating in the NorthWest Crossing Farmer’s Market since the beginning.
