The Manufacturing Process:
Thin wall glass fiber and carbon fiber polycarbonate parts are injection molded on 400 ton machines in Washington State, then shipped to our shop in Bend, Oregon. When an order is placed, a work order is printed, which tells production the instrument size, color, and custom shop items. This starts the 3 day process of manufacturing an Outdoor Ukulele™.
The two halves of the instrument are pulled from the stock room and custom shop items, such as strap buttons and pickups, are installed. Then the glue joints are cleaned, primed, and heated before an industrial Cyanoacrylate adhesive is applied and the joined parts are placed into machined aluminum fixtures for curing.
Tuning machines are installed using stainless steel screws developed for polymers. Then the stock fluorocarbon strings or custom strings are installed and the instrument is tuned. We tune the instrument multiple times over 24 hours to pre-stretch the strings.
