July 2010: Congratulations to Margaret Fischer, our first recipient of the "NorthWest Crossing Community Garden of the Month Award" for her extraordinary efforts in producing a beautiful and bountiful garden.

Opening Day at the Community Garden

Monday, May 10th - Despite a few clouds and a cool May morning, the opening day of the NorthWest Community Garden was a success!  Over 100 eager resident gardeners showed up to celebrate the official opening of the garden.  Scrumptious treats were provided by Jaime and Ginger Aguirre of Ginger's Kitchenware and Sage Cafe helped out with hot chocolate, tea and coffee.  Gardeners listened to short presentations from the OSU Extension Service Master Gardeners about what to plant, what not to plant, soil temperature, garden covers, and potential garden pests.  Several residents dove right into their plots and planted rows of carrots, beets, lettuce, peppers and onions, just to name a few.  Stop by the garden to see the progress that is being made on a daily basis.

A HUGE thank you to Botanical Developments for the outstanding work that was dedicated to creating such a phenomenal garden space.  The art, the plants, the fence, the plots, the irrigation, and even the bike rack have exceeded expectations.

NorthWest Crossing Resident Community Garden

Monday, May 3rd - The community garden is almost ready for spring planting! It features a total of 59 raised garden beds and is located on on the corner of NW Crossing Drive and Clearwater Drive, just west of Discovery Park Lodge and north of Summit High School. All plots have been reserved and assigned to residents through a recent lottery process.

The community garden was built by the developer of NorthWest Crossing, West Bend Property Company, and is managed by the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener program.  The garden features cedar, raised beds with drip irrigation and is enclosed by an eight-foot tall wire fence.

Opening day is Saturday, May 8th (attendance is mandatory for plot owners) and will feature speakers from the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener program about what is best to plant in a garden in central Oregon and when to plant it.  Volunteer "garden angels" from the OSU Master Gardener program will also be available to answer questions and provide tips for participants throughout the growing season.  For more information about the OSU Extension Service programs, visit http://extension.oregonstate.edu/deschutes/

Both La Rosa and portello wine cafe, restaurants in NorthWest Crossing, will be participating in the community garden. They will feature fresh produce grown in their garden plot on their summer menus.
